Congratulations to Luisina Kemanian Leites, a Paterno Fellow and Schreyer Scholar, who was selected as the first runner up for the Robert F. Guentter, Jr. Outstanding Undergraduate Thesis Award. Luisina who is graduating with a B.A. in International Politics and Latin American Studies with minors in Arabic, Middle East Studies, and Spanish, conducted a quantitative analysis to examine whether military interventions were successful in reducing the extent and duration of mass killings and genocides. Importantly, her research demonstrates that genocides with interventions are actually more severe than those where there is no intervention. Her work, entitled A Solution to “The Problem from Hell”?: Quantifying the Effects of International Military Interventions During Mass Killings and Genocides was supervised by Associate Professor of Political Science, Roseanne McManus. The Guentter Award was initiated by the University Libraries to emphasize the importance of utilizing quality research methods and employing a thorough understanding of the legal and ethical issues related to the use of information.
