This study shows that after the Russo–Ukrainian war began in 2022, about one-third of foreign companies in Russia either changed ownership or became inactive within 18 months. These exit decisions were highly politicized, shaped not only by public pressure but also by Russian state interests, suggesting that multinational firms are not always reliable tools of economic statecraft.
