Internship Opportunity: Project Vote Smart

Project Vote Smart is hiring up to 80 interns for the 2008 Presidential Election.  This year promises to be one of the most exciting and unique years in the Project's 16-year history.  After 16 years and the efforts of over 6,000 people, we are finally ready to deliver our Voter's Self Defense System to the nation.  Through our system, citizens can instantly access factual information on any candidate and will soon discover that tolerance of today's political scene is no longer their only option.

We've launched a new website at www.votesmart.org, are running ads in major national publications, and have organized a nationwide bus tour all in an effort to improve citizens' access to information on their candidates and elected officials.  As part of this effort, we are hiring more interns than ever before to help us respond to the millions of citizens that are about to discover Project Vote Smart.

We are seeking interns to work in our media, research, information technology, public relations and membership divisions.  Interns gain hands on political experience, while working and living in our wilderness retreat nestled high in the Montana Rockies.  Our location offers numerous outdoor activities, including hiking, biking, skiing, camping, fishing, swimming, snowshoeing, snowmobiling and much more.

Please visit the internship page of our website - http://www.votesmart.org/program_internships.php and our blog - http://votesmart.org/blog/ - for more information about interning at Project Vote Smart.

Course / Credit Option in Canada

Dr. Robert Speel, associate professor of political science at the Penn State Erie campus, will be offering a course on North American Politics (PL SC 299 or PL SC 499, each for 3 credits) in downtown Toronto from May 11 to June 7, 2008.  The course can be used toward fulfillment of political science major or minor requirements, and the PL SC 499 version of the course can be used toward fulfillment of requirements in the international politics major.

Deadline: March 21, Deadline to apply for Education Abroad scholarship and grant money from Penn State occurs on February 15.

PL SC 299 and PL SC 499 will be offered in downtown Toronto and co-taught by Dr. Speel and Dr. Gregory Inwood of Ryerson University as a Penn State Education Abroad program. Penn State students will live on the Ryerson University campus and share a classroom with Ryerson students to discuss comparative American and Canadian politics and Canadian-American international relations.  Grading for PL SC 299 will be based on exams and class participation. The PL SC 499 version of the course will include a required research paper due a month after the program in Toronto finishes, on which students can work once they return home to the United States.  Classes will meet Monday-Thursday afternoon each week with weekends free for excursions to landmarks and attractions around Toronto.

The class will compare and contrast the development of American and Canadian political culture, political institutions, electoral processes, and regionalism and federalism, as well as policies in the two countries toward economics, health care, immigration, abortion, gun control, drugs, and gay marriage. The class will also discuss Canadian-American relations on a number of issues such as border security, the war on terrorism, historical border disputes, trade, Afghanistan, Iraq, and Arctic sovereignty.  Class excursions will visit sites such as Fort York, important in the War of 1812, and the Ontario Parliament Buildings. Penn State students will also visit sites such as the CN Tower and Royal Ontario Museum while in Toronto.

The Ryerson University residence in downtown Toronto offers motel-sized rooms with private bathrooms. Each room contains a television, phone, and air conditioning. Each floor contains a kitchenette, laundry, and TV lounge. High-speed internet is available for an additional monthly charge.  A 24-hour supermarket is located next door to the residence. Students will have the option of staying in their Ryerson rooms until the morning of June 10, if they wish to stay a few days past the end of the course.

Students in the course will be responsible for paying Penn State Summer tuition for 3 credits, which will range between $1365-$1581 for Pennsylvania residents and $2088-$2328 for out-of-state students, depending on major and semester standing.   The Ryerson residence will cost $26 per night in Canadian dollars for 30 nights for a total of $780 for a month in downtown Toronto - the exact amount in US dollars will depend on exchange rates in April. There is also $82 in Penn State fees for an international student ID card and a mandatory health insurance premium. Students age 26 or over will need to pay an additional $30 for the health insurance.  Students will also need to pay their own transportation costs to and from Toronto and for any food and personal expenses. As noted above, there is a 24-hour supermarket next to the Ryerson residence, and the Ryerson campus is surrounded within a few blocks by probably over a hundred inexpensive fast food eateries.

Financial aid is available from Penn State to cover some of the costs of tuition and the residence for the course and program. Penn State University offers grants and scholarships of amounts between $500-$2000 to students studying abroad. The deadline for the university application is February 15.

Brochures are available from the Political Science Department office and the Penn State Education Abroad office (410 Boucke Building).  Full application packets, including the financial aid application form, can be acquired by contacting Patty Conboy (pxv3@psu.edu).

If you have questions about the course and program, feel free to contact Dr. Speel at the Penn State Erie campus at rws15@psu.edu.
