Welcome to Political Science at Penn State. We have some new faces around the department. Stop by and say hello!
Burt Monroe (Ph.D, University of Oxford (St. Hugh's College), 1994) joins us as an associate professor. His research in comparative politics spans institutions (electoral systems, legislatures, constitutions) and behavior (voting, language, party dynamics), while his methodological work addresses Bayesian methods, statistical learning, and statistical graphics. He has published extensively on these topics. He is the recipient of an NSF grant for his project on The Dynamics of Political Rhetoric and Political Representation.
Peer Consultants. Questions about the major, what goes on in different classes, or how to find a good gen ed? Students often know best. Stop by 202 Pond Lab and meet with one of our peer consultants. All our peer consultants are new this year and looking forward to meeting our majors and potential majors.

The Scottish National Party's new Internship Programme offers the unique possibility for selected students to experience the political world and work of the Scottish Parliament in Edinburgh. Centred in the Scottish National Party’s Headquarter, it offers the opportunity to participate actively in our work as the main opposition party of Scotland. Human Rights Delegations for Young Leaders—Deadline approaching
El Salvador, Cambodia, and Rwanda
Winter 2007 Programs
Application Deadline: September 22, 2006
Now Accepting Applications!
Global Youth Connect, an international human rights organization, is
pleased to announce that we are currently recruiting young leaders
(ages 18-25) to participate in human rights delegations during the
winter of 2007. Program locations include: El Salvador, Cambodia, and
Rwanda.
Human rights delegations are a unique, first-hand opportunity to cross
cultural boundaries and learn about the daily reality of human rights
as experienced in a complex and increasingly globalized world. Each
delegation weaves together three core sets of activities: site visits
to local organizations, hands-on fieldwork projects, and a cross-
cultural human rights training workshop.
Cambodia (December 27, 2006 - January 17, 2007)
Program Tuition: $1,795
Participants will learn about the historical roots of conflict and
genocide in Cambodia. We will examine how current human rights
challenges are impacting the country, particularly their effect on the
lives of Cambodian youth. We will connect with young Cambodians and
get involved in collaborative projects to support the development and
rebuilding process already underway.
El Salvador (January 2 - January 17, 2007)
Program Tuition: $1,635
This program will explore the roots of El Salvador's 12 year civil
war, the long term impact of the war on Salvadoran society, and the
continued persistence of long-standing economic and social inequities
that have fueled conflict throughout this tiny nation's history.
Delegation activities will focus in particular on the efforts of human
rights activists and youth to recover from a tumultuous and
devastating period of violence and repression, and build a more just,
equitable, and peaceful society. Spanish
proficiency is required.
Rwanda (December 29 Â January 15, 2007)
Program Tuition: $1,795
This program will explore the roots of the 1994 Rwandan genocide and
how this legacy of violence has impacted the country and its people,
particularly Rwandan youth. Participants will learn more about the
current situation in Rwanda, connect with young Rwandans, and get
involved in collaborative projects aimed at promoting peace and
reconciliation.
Application Deadline: Applications accepted on a rolling basis but we
encourage you to apply as soon as possible. Final deadline to receive
applications is September 22, 2006.
How to Apply: We invite interested young leaders to apply. We are
looking for participants who are between the ages of 18-25, possess
U.S. citizenship or residency, or are studying full-time at a U.S.
college or university. Most importantly, applicants should wish to
expand their knowledge and understanding of human rights and social
justice. Participants will become part of a growing global movement
of youth acting together for compassion, human rights and
responsibility. Go to www.globalyouthconnect.org/participate.
