Undergraduate Interns

“The Center for Immigration Studies (www.cis.org) is the nation’s only think tank devoted exclusively to the research and critique of U.S. immigration policy. The Center is animated by a unique pro-immigrant, low-immigration vision which seeks fewer immigrants but a warmer welcome for those admitted.  The Center is a leading voice in the drive to inform policymakers and the public about immigration’s far-reaching impact.  Undergraduate interns are accepted for all semesters.  Work hours, typically 12-20 hours per week, are flexible and unpaid.  Interns assist the Center’s staff with a variety of research, media relations, and administrative tasks.  Also, interns will likely attend the Center’s events and Congressional hearings.  Applications are accepted year-round, though earlier applicants will have a particular advantage.  To apply, please send you cover letter and resume as an e-mail attachments to press@cis.org.”

Internships with Congressman Altmire, 4th Congressional District PA

We received this note about internships from first term Congressman Jason Altmire.  Congressman Altmire is Chairman of the Investigations and Oversight Subcommittee of the House Small Business Committee; as well as serving on the Education and Labor Committee and the Transportation and Infrastructure Committee.  You can pick up an application from Angela Hill in 202 Pond Lab, or by contacting his office directly.

I welcome and encourage all college students interested in either full or part-time internships in my Washington, DC and district offices to submit their resumes. As an intern in one of my offices, you will gain a unique and first hand perspective of the inner workings of the legislative process, the federal government and constituent services.

Internships run throughout the fall, spring or summer semesters for college students only. Although internships in all offices are unpaid, students gain invaluable work experience. The hours are flexible to accommodate students’ hectic course schedules, but generally run from 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. when Congress is in session, and 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. when Congress is not in session.

By assisting my district staff, interns may be asked to do a variety of things, including day-to-day office work such as answering phones, writing letters, or assisting with media clips. In addition, interns may be assigned to assist with various constituent casework, or with district-based projects of importance. You will be able to see first- hand how the district office interacts with the community and serves as a liaison to my Washington, DC office.  My district offices are located in Natrona Heights and Aliquippa, but off-site projects may be available.

In Washington, interns’ responsibilities will vary. They may be asked to answer phones, lead tours, research legislation for the Member and legislative staff, attend hearings and briefings, or answer constituent letters on various issues before the House. As a result, interns learn about the legislative process and the many other functions of a congressional office.

In order to apply for an internship, please send the following items to altmireintern@mail.house.gov for the Washington D.C. internship or olivia.benson@mail.house.gov for the District Office internship:

If you would like more information on internships or have any questions, please contact Rachel Kaufman in Washington D.C. at 202-225-2565 or Olivia Benson in the District Office at 724-378-0928.
