The Minor in Business and the Liberal Arts

Did you know that nearly one-third of graduates from Political Science and International Politics at Penn State work for a business?  And this doesn’t include the one-third of our alumni who end up working for law firms.  These numbers are somewhat fuzzy, but they capture a basic reality:  Lots of students end up in the business world even though they have had a minimum of business courses, if any, and probably did not think about it too much while they were in college.   Businesses, however, understand the value of students who study the Liberal Arts.

To help students become better aware of the wide array of opportunities available to them and to give them a particularly Liberal Arts perspective on business, the Department of Political Science has started this year to administer the revised Minor in Business and the Liberal Arts.  It may be right for you.  Here are some its highlights:

Learn more about LA 200 in the following ways.  Check out the requirements here.  Enroll in LA 200 for 1 credit (you don’t need to be a minor).  Stop by and talk with the new advisor for the minor, Melissa Gayman (mag31@psu.edu) in 202 Pond Lab.

Interested in Credits for Your Internship?

Effective spring 2008 you can get credits for your internship directly from the Department of Political Science.  Our internship course (LA 495.18A) will be supervised by Suzanne Gold who teaches a variety of courses in American Politics.  You can enroll in this course for 3 or 6 credits and you can use up to three credits directly in the major (check with your advisor if you are uncertain about this).  We’ll be opening enrollment to this course within a couple of weeks, so if you have a spring internship in mind check with Angela Hill or our website to see when you can start enrolling.  You’ll need to come by Pond Lab and complete an application to enroll.

If you have questions about what’s involved to get credits check in with Dr. Gold.  You can find her office hours here:  polisci.la.psu.edu/faculty_office_hours.html

Summer enrollment in LA 495.18A will open in the spring.  And if you are doing the Washington Program in the fall you should enroll in a different section section of LA495.  Again, Angela Hill or your advisor can advise you on the correct section.

Enrichment Funds for Summer Internships

We offer enrichment funds for summer internships.  Financially eligible students may receive between 150 and 1,000 dollars.  Applications will be available early spring.  Sorry, we don’t have enrichment funds for spring internships.  Be sure to apply to the College of Liberal Arts for their enrichment funds too.

Internship Opportunity: Project Vote Smart

Are you interested an internship outside Washington DC?  How about in the Montana mountains doing non-partisan research for the upcoming elections?  Project Vote Smart is worth looking into—several of our students have done internships at their ranch in Montana on several research projects related to political candidates, the media, and legislatures.  Vote Smart internships last for 10 weeks in the spring and summer.  They provide room and board and some may pay a stipend as well.

Blow Off Sophomore Slump…
…and be the B.O.S.S. of your career to Build Opportunities for Sophomore Success !

Date:  Wednesday, November 7, 2007 from 1:00-4:00 PM
Location:  Career Services Center

(Lobby – general info tables, 103 – academic college info tables, and 234 - workshops)

After “Will I fit in at Penn State?” and ”Will I be able to handle the work?”; the next series of questions on the minds of students when they arrive on campus are “Why am I here?” “Am I taking the right courses?” “What is the best major/Am I in the right major?” and “What am I going to do with my life?”  Clearly career development, exploration and planning issues are out there and if they are not addressed effectively, by sophomore year students may become frustrated and/or paralyzed slumping into a downward spiral that impacts them academically, socially, personally and physically.

Knowing what will productively assist sophomores and rising sophomores in finding their way through the maze of questions and determining meaningful short and long-term goals will energize them by providing the much needed purpose for their academic and career pursuits while bringing the mosaic of their career/life plan into focus – laying the foundation for building opportunities for a successful sophomore year and beyond.

Format:
PART I
Information “Major” Fair

PART II
Workshops – each program running twice from 12:00 noon – 5:00 PM
