Joel Simmons’ research focuses on the political economy of development, with emphases in economic growth, social policy, global economic integration, corruption, the political economy of gender, and the ways political parties and party systems influence development outcomes.  His book, The Politics of Technological Progress: Parties, Time Horizons and Long-term Economic Development, published by Cambridge University Press in 2016 studies the political underpinnings of technological progress in the economy. Other projects include research regarding the effects of oil wealth on women’s economic and political power, research regarding the relationship between female legislators and corruption, and research regarding the link between natural resources and corruption in the U.S. states.
